Grandmothers’ Spiritual Heritage
My grandmothers are the wisest women I have ever known. Their legacy continues from generation to generation: all the knowledge they have shared, all the love and bonds that unite them with others, all those little smiles that tell so much without the need for a word of the word.
These wise women have experienced thousands of lives in one go and know more about overcoming adversity than any self-help guide on the shelf. Uncompromising love and wisdom from courage do not require things, but enrich and protect.
The legacy of past generations, the teachings of our grandmothers, is proof of the mark these wise women leave behind.
In this article, we focus on three generations of bonds; grandmothers, mothers and daughters.
The invisible bond of wise women
It is said that grandmothers are the most skillful artisans, specializing in passing information from one generation to another without words.
We often encounter grandmothers in the middle of their important routines or rituals, in the middle of organizing things, cooking, reading… Our grandmothers can be active and stubborn, or tender and quiet. Not all grandmothers may be bun-scented moms who can listen to your grief over a cup of tea every day, but whatever your grandmother is, there is certainly a lot you could learn from her.
We could look at them for eternity: the way they braid their gray hair and lift it over their heads. Each of their movements arises from years of practice, but also from silence.
In reality, we will never really know all the secrets they have experienced in their lives, all the sorrows and weeping tears, the disappointments that were swallowed, and the celebrations that were celebrated. The past no longer matters, as time inevitably passes and past wounds heal eventually, every grandmother knows this personally.
The grandmothers passed on to their daughters the knowledge of their lives, passed on to them their courage and the truths that remain as truths from year to year. They could counsel their daughters in love: be strong, be brave, trust yourself. Grandmothers said their hearts should not be given to someone who doesn’t deserve it. The grandmothers taught that there are sorrows that should not be kept in mind and joys that do not need to be shouted at to the whole world. The grandmothers told how to live life to the fullest, not caring too much about what others think: they said that in life you have to trust your instincts and keep your eyes open.
Raising wise women
Raising children is not the same thing as raising grandchildren. Often the role of grandmothers in upbringing is more relaxed, more comfortable and also important for the child.
Grandmother does not have the same pressure to control a grandchild’s life as parents do. They don’t have to be actively involved in every day’s events, and they’re not constantly present to hear the child crying or complaining. Grandparents are a nice addition to family dynamics and they often like to act as babysitters. Grandparents can pamper and play with their grandchildren, without fear that the children will become toy peers. The role of parents is to keep discipline, grandparents can take it easy. Grandparents let parents make rules and set boundaries.
Grandmothers bring protection and security to grandchildren, like an old tree in its own right, providing roots for grandchildren. The tree withstands storms and rain and blooms in summer, its shim can seek solace. There’s always something delicious baking in Grandma’s oven, the candy can is buzzing and by bedtime, Grandma has thousands of stories to tell.
The legacy of grandmothers transcends generational boundaries. Grandmothers are brave and genuine women who often talk about perseverance and guts. Looking at Grandma’s face, we feel a certain peace, a feeling that everything will end well in the end and that little storms will not knock anyone. Grandmother has survived life, its many stages and missteps. The grandmothers lived in a different world that they can remember with longing. Grandmothers are the generation that may have had to make sacrifices more than women in the modern world.
Grandmothers may reflect their own dreams to grandchildren, they may convey their passion for their hobbies, or share their thoughts with grandchildren. No love is more authentic than a grandmother’s love for grandchildren. As long as you stop listening, you can learn a lot about life from your grandmother.
