Mentally Overweight: Thoughts And Their Consequences
If you feel that your body is tired, stiff or tender all the time, then you may be overweight. But now we are not talking about physical mass, but rather mental overweight. We mean many negative, lifeless, unproductive thoughts.
During the day, we dream, understand, reflect, create, calculate, make decisions… In short, we think constantly. But not all ideas are valid or useful. Sometimes we think too much and in a useless way, and we come up with an overloaded amount of useless thoughts.
If we stick to thoughts that don’t benefit us in any way or take us anywhere, eventually our minds will lose enthusiasm. It becomes heavy, corroded and stuck, and it is incapable of doing other positive things.
Thoughts are the basic unit of the mind
As we know, thinking is part of human nature. It is a process that separates us from other living beings. But thinking is not always conscious. Actually, the opposite.
Think, for example, of an iceberg. The tip of the iceberg is conscious thinking. The rest of the iceberg beneath the surface, which is also for the most part, is unconscious thinking.
According to Dr. Michael Shalden, chief researcher at The Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute of Columbia University , “most of the thinking in our brain takes place outside the radar of consciousness, which means that even though our brain processes these thoughts, we are not aware of them.”
Thus, the quality of our thoughts determines how our day goes. Our development depends on the conscious and unconscious thoughts in our minds.
“Garbage thoughts” make our minds fat
Garbage thoughts deplete us, as they do not offer us any benefit. They are empty and even toxic reasoning. And they begin in our conscious mind. That is, mental overweight is not the result of repressed mental processes, impulses, or desires. This is intentional.
They are completely useless. Instead of providing more self-awareness and cognitive benefits, they consume our energy and slow down our conscious processing. They prevent us from being creative and understanding, or learning new skills. They prevent us and paralyze us.
Therefore, when we are mentally overweight, our thoughts act as junk food. In addition, they have physical consequences, one of which may even be obesity – physical, therefore. Among them is also physical exhaustion, which makes even walking and physical exertion difficult. We may also have difficulty breathing normally, sweating more, widespread pain in our joints, and even skin problems such as acne.
Causes of mental obesity
There are a wide variety of toxic thoughts, including:
- Criticism: when we blame, condemn, or criticize other people, in reality, we are only rebutting ourselves. We diminish the value of our own self-esteem and reflect our own weaknesses in another person.
- Pity: Being a victim is a huge hurdle that prevents us from making progress. We need to get out of that authoritarian grief, and we should not take part in negative, frustrating, or useless thoughts.
- Assumptions: The only thing assumptions do is consume us to the end. Theories, riddles, and calculations just hurt us, and almost automatically they create mental weight. How can we think we know what others think when it is impossible to know?
- Conditionals: “If I had done this…” “Maybe I should have…” If we didn’t do something, we shouldn’t torture ourselves with it. What has been done has been done. Now we can only learn from it. Such thoughts only condemn us and destroy us.
How do we drop weight in our opinion?
To avoid toxic thoughts, we cannot let thoughts control us. So it is important that we learn to control them. To do this, we can follow these tips:
- Let your mind rest: Meditation is a great way to attract positive thoughts. Artistic exercises such as painting can also help release tension and exchange junk thoughts for more lucrative thoughts. In addition, reading, going to the movies, workshops and seminars help us relax our minds.
- Eliminate Social Toxins: Identify social interpersonal relationships that may be harmful. For example, if we are surrounded by people who are gossiping and critical, we ourselves end up doing the same. Let us look for a more enriching environment, one that spreads strength, energy and positivity.
- Stop Thoughts: If we have a toxic thought in our mind, we need to stop it. As paradoxical as it may sound, we need to focus entirely on that negative thought. And after a few minutes, we can remove them completely and get rid of them in our minds.
If we have negative thoughts every now and then, we don’t show them outward. But if they are always present, they begin to affect our ability to do things, as well as our quality of life.
Mentally overweight people can try to move away from their own reality and cover up their inner emptiness at the expense of the mental well-being of others. They are people who have a need to unravel their fruitless thoughts and free themselves from all the unpleasant feelings they produce. Don’t let them contaminate you.
If we care about the quality of our thoughts, we also care about the quality of our lives. Don’t forget this.
