Time Flies. Fortunately, You Have Wings.
You may think you don’t have time for everything. The real problem, however, is that time is not enough for you. You may feel confused as the days, months, and years as you pass by… However, remember this: even if time really flies, you have wings. You should always manage your flying experience so that you also have time to enjoy the scenery.
Aurelius Agustinus once pointed out that only a few things are as complex to define as time. ” If no one asks me, I know what it is, but if someone asks ‘what time is it?’ , I can’t explain it. ” Things become more and more complex as we begin to define different perceptions of time by all cultures and countries.
For many Western societies, “time is money”. It may seem uncomfortable, but after the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the permanent and unstoppable “tik tak, tik tak” is synonymous with money. Our day-to-day operations are guided by a series of patterns and routines that are mostly defined as work schedules.
This is a particularly interesting point that should make us stop and think. According to a publication by Business Insider , countries like the UK, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands and Austria have a linear view of time. They also believe that the time spent at work is well spent.
In southern European countries, however, such as Spain and Italy, things are a little different. Writers like Richard Lewis tell us people are “multi-stage” in places like this. The more they can do at the same time, the happier they will feel. However, they don’t think the best way to invest time is to work, but with other people. In this case, well-spent time therefore means quality human relationships.
Childhood, adulthood
The child has a very different perception of time than the adult. For children who are just in the early stages of their lives, sensory knowledge is so powerful, magical, and fascinating that everything feels more alive. The days go by slowly and calmly, like a giant elephant walking the pace of a snail through a unique world. That world is a collage of shapes, textures and colors, combining infinite things, new knowledge and memories.
Adults, on the other hand, live deep in the depths of a music box that constantly plays the same melody. Strict routines kill the tension and shackle to a predictable cycle that detaches us from everything that once seemed so exceptional.
So, if the world feels too familiar and each day follows a similar pattern, it’s time to cool it down. The notion of time for adults has long since separated from the company of the elephant. As we walked with the elephant, it urged us to move more slowly, to focus on everything in the here and now.
Two conceptions of time, child and adult, confirm what William James called “psychological time”. This theory reminds us that time does not necessarily have to accelerate as we age. To some extent, it all depends on how we live our lives and how much we have the ability to try and appreciate the nuances of life with wonder and curiosity.
Open your wings, don’t let time fly for you
Time flies faster when we are adults. We all know this. However, it is important to note that we are the ones with wings. So we should allow ourselves to enjoy the present and enjoy the scenery. We should seize the moment and let its warm breezes show us the most beautiful sunrises.
Nonetheless, it is clear that we have responsibilities, work, achievable goals, and routines that support the harmony of our existence. However, if we want to achieve a better quality of life, we need to understand one small thing. Time is the most valuable thing we can use. Therefore, we need to choose wisely how we spend our time and where to properly invest it.
If we don’t enjoy what we do or work, we waste our lives. The years roll by, they disappear like sugar in the ocean. We can’t let that happen. There are times when we have to let things happen, but there are also times when we have to do something ourselves. So we make things come true then, because we want and need them.
To achieve this, we must open our wings and seek our destiny, our place, our people, our destination… We should do whatever is possible. We need to make full use of the time we have.
